Weighing Your Options: How to Choose the Best Non-Invasive Fat Reduction
You have tried all dieting methods and all kinds of exercise but still can’t seem to get rid of those stubborn pockets of fats. But it is not the end of the world. Thanks to advancement in technology, it is now just a matter of choosing between the different kinds of fat reduction treatments.
There are surgical and non-surgical options for fat reduction readily available in Singapore today. However, it is always important to take note of the pros and cons of surgical and non-surgical options before deciding which option is most appropriate for you.
Surgical Fat Reduction
Surgical Fat Reduction, also known as Liposuction is to completely remove adipose fat cells in certain areas of the body. It is not necessarily performed to reduce body weight or remove cellulite as a treatment of obesity. Rather, liposuction is to reshape certain areas of the body, and typically targets "problem areas" that do not respond well to diet and exercise.
The results become apparent after full recovery and this surgery can be done within a day. Another advantage is that more fat can be removed (up to an approximate limit of 5L) and the amount of fat removed can be measured.
That being said, liposuction is not without risks and these have to be considered in full before deciding whether to proceed with the procedure.
Liposuction Risks
Body contour irregularities: Your skin may appear uneven and "wavy" if uneven amounts of fat are removed, have poor skin elasticity or have abnormal healing.
Numbness: You may experience temporary or permanent numbness around the area that is treated if there is trauma to the nerves during the surgery.
Bruising / Swelling / Soreness after the surgery: These can last for weeks / months after the surgery.
Pockets of fluid retention: Commonly called Seromas, may gather under the skin and will require surgical drainage.
Fat embolism: This is when fat cells enters the blood vessels and cause obstruction. Obstruction can occur in the lungs, brain etc and can result in serious consequences.
Puncture of the internal organs / intestines: This is another serious complication and if not picked up quick enough can result in death.
Complications from anesthesia that can affect the heart and neurological system resulting in heart attacks, strokes and death.
Liposuction is not recommended for individuals with health problems with blood flow or have heart disease, diabetes, or a weak immune system.
Non-surgical Fat Reduction
If the surgical method sounds too invasive and you feel that you’re not ready and prepared for it, there are other effective Non-surgical options for fat reduction. It does its job to reduce isolated pockets of "diet and exercise resistant" fat and with little to no downtime.
Common Non-surgical fat reduction treatments in Singapore are the TruSculpt ID and the CoolSculpt Fat Freezing.
Non-surgical fat reduction is a good option for those who have tried diet and exercise but still have stubborn pockets of fat.
What is the TruSculpt ID?
TruSculpt ID is the newest and latest Non-Surgical body contouring treatment by world-renown Cutera
that uses radiofrequency energy to destroy fat cells. It allows you to personalize treatment areas that require fat reduction and target pockets of fat in stubborn areas.
Armed with 7 fat-busting probes, the Trusculpt ID is now able to target larger surface areas and previously hard to reach areas of the body and double chin.
As little as 15 minutes is all that is needed for 1 session.
Parts of the body which are suitable for TruSculpt ID:
How doesTruSculpt ID work?
Fat cells are heated using Cutera’s
patented monopolar radiofrequency technology until they are destroyed and naturally eliminated by our body. According to research, there is an average of 24-26% fat reduction after just one treatment session.
Multiple body areas can be simultaneously treated thanks to the system’s versatility. It also features Real-Time Temperature Control for clinically proven results, safety, and patient experience.
The TruSculpt ID delivers optimum heat to the entire fat layer to destroy the fat cells whilst maintaining a comfortable skin temperature – optimizing clinical efficacy and maintaining maximum patient comfort.
Cutera’s
patented 2 MHz Monopolar RF: Low frequency and uniform delivery of RF technology, penetrates deep to treat the entire fat layers.
Real-Time Temperature Control: Skin temperature is continuously monitored and energy delivery is automatically adjusted to reach and maintain a therapeutic and optimal temperature of >45ºC for fat destruction, while maintaining 3-4ºC cooler than usual skin temperature for patient comfort.
12 Weeks After truSculpt iD Treatment: Average of 24-26% fat reduction
Fat-Heat Selectivity: Optimized energy delivery and heating enhances selective apoptosis/destruction of the subcutaneous adipose tissue.
An average of 24-26%% fat cells are irreversibly damaged and excreted from the body after the treatment.
What is the procedure like?
During the procedure, the TruSculpt iD probes are placed on the areas of concern. The treatment then commences and patients will start to feel heat from the probes.
That being said, all of our patients have commented that it is akin to a hot-stone massage and is virtually painless.
After the procedure, the probes are removed and some pinkish-ness may be seen and will subside over 30 mins to an hour.
You may resume normal activities immediately after the procedure as there is no downtime.
Benefits of the TruSculpt iD
TruSculpt ID is clinically proven to cause inflammation and fat necrosis from beneath the dermis down to 1.5 cm in depth. The histological findings are complemented by clinical studies which show an average 24 – 26% fat reduction as measured by ultrasound.
Cost of TruSculpt ID
As TruSculpt is armed with 7 fat-busting probes, it gives you the flexibility to only pay for the required number of probes used. Cost per probe for 1 session is from $280 (excl gst).
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is an opposite approach as compared to the TruSculpt iD in fat removal. CoolSculpting is an FDA approved, non-invasive treatment to get rid of fat under our skin by freezing the fat cells from outside your body.
For comparison sake, we will be comparing the "original" fat freezing device: CoolSculpting
by Zeltiq.
How does it work?
Coolsculpting uses the process of cryolipolysis, which destroys fat cells through freezing.
As targeted fat cells are exposed to a sub-zero temperature, a process of cellular removal is initiated. Fat cells in the treated area become disrupted and are eliminated from the body through its natural metabolic processes while skin, muscle, and other tissue in the treatment area remain unaffected.
For the CoolSculpting procedure, patients will need to have a certain amount of "pincheable" fat as it works by sucking this amount of fat (via vacuum suction) into the treatment applicator and then freezing these fats between 2 cooling plates.
What happens during a CoolSculpting treatment?
During the treatment, a gel pad and applicator is applied to the targeted area, and a 35-60 minutes long treatment session ensues. During the procedure, the area of concern is vacuum-sucked into the applicator where it is sandwiched between 2 cooling plates.
The area is then "cooled" to sub-zero temperatures to ensure fat cell death. Patients will feel a strong suction/tugging sensation followed by cold and subsequently numbness.
Results can be seen as early as 1 month, but for most, it takes 2 to 3 months. CoolSculpting also promises up to 25% reduction in fat cells in the area treated.
Cost of CoolSculpting
Coolsculpting is from $600/applicator per session (excl gst).

And the Winner is…. TruSculpt ID !
Here at M-Aesthetic Clinic, we choose to offer TruSculpt over CoolSculpting as our primary Non-Surgical body contouring option due to two main factors:
Time & Results:
The TruSculpt iD is able to provide a more dramatic result after 1 session. It is the only device that can destroy Fat + cause Skin Tightening. The TruSculpt iD is also the most efficient Fat Reduction device to date with each session taking only 15 mins so much so that you can get it done even during your lunch break.
Patient Discomfort and Side Effects:
While both treatments are minimally invasive, we have received feedback from patients that have tried Coolsculpting that it is more painful and common to have bruising and swelling after the procedure. On the other hand, they have found the TruSculpt iD to be a very comfortable process without downtime.
